Jones was also an early advocate of the potential usefulness of x-rays in medical practice see article on Charles Thurstan Holland for further details 3,6. It was first described by Sir Robert Jones (1857-1933), Welsh orthopedic surgeon, in 1902. Internal fixation and even bone grafting may be required in cases of non-union, or where the fracture is significantly displaced. The outcomes are similar with almost 100% union rates 7. Management includes either intramedullary screw fixation or open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF is also the main management option as a salvage procedure when there is non-union following screw fixation) 7. Operative management is indicated in patients that are elite or competitive athletes or in non-operatively managed fractures when delayed union has occurred 7,8. In contrast to avulsion fractures, Jones fractures are prone to non-union (with rates as high as 30-50%) and almost always take longer than two months to heal 2.ĭisplacement of the fracture can increase with persistent weight-bearing, therefore, immobilization is important as part of the initial therapy, with a non-weight bearing cast for 6-8 weeks. Indications for non-operative management include undisplaced fractures and fractures in patients with limited activity (i.e. Jones fracture is located at the metadiaphyseal junction, approximately 2 cm (1.5-3 cm) from the tip of the 5 th metatarsal, and has a predominantly horizontal course. Radiographic features Plain radiograph/CT The fracture is believed to occur as a result of significant adduction force to the forefoot with the ankle in plantar flexion 5. It is a transverse fracture at the base of the fifth metatarsal, 1.5 to 3 cm distal to the proximal tuberosity at the metadiaphyseal junction, without distal extension.

When the dominant female dies the head male changes sex and becomes the female.Ĭlownfish lay eggs on any flat surface close to or under protection of their host anemones. Clownfish live in their anemone in groups. Juvenile clownfish will not survive for long without the protection of an anemone, and few find one before being eaten. This theory is bolstered by the fact that juvenile clownfish, which have no coating, will immediately seek refuge in any compatible anemone and will not be stung. Thirdly, their unique movements, which are unlike any other fish, may let the anemone know that they are not food. Firstly, the slime coating of the fish may be based on sugar rather than proteins so anemones fail to recognize the fish as food and do not fire their stings. If you get the book, read every other word, then go back and read the words in between. There are several theories for how this avoidance is accomplished. In an aquarium, where they do not have to forage for food, it is very common for clownfish to remain within 6 to 12 inches of their host for an entire lifetime.Ĭlownfish and damselfish are the only species of fish which can avoid the potent stings of an anemone. For this reason, clownfish never stray far from their host. However, you will find the Clownfish Voice Changer icon in the System Tray. The anemone is required in nature because reef life is dangerous for small, brightly colored fish in an aquarium lacking predators it is not needed. Once an anemone or coral has been adopted, the clownfish will defend it. Clownfish live in a mutual relationship with sea anemones, or in some cases settle in some varieties of soft corals or large polyp stony corals. Clownfish are not found in the Atlantic Ocean. Let’s now take a closer look at the Blink Lite electric skateboard and the company behind this awesome product. Try doing that on a flat road with your standard board. They may be smaller, but some hub motors can propel you along at speeds of up to 25 mph. The single hub motor is much smaller and typically runs on lithium batteries. Meaning you won’t get tired pushing all day and you can even ride up hills. Instead of pushing, riders use a Bluetooth remote to control the speed settings of the skateboard. These days, electric skateboards work a little differently. It’s not much of a surprise that they didn’t really take off. They were bulky, inconvenient, and sometimes would even cause a lot of danger to boarders. In the old days, electric skateboards would have large motors and wires dangling around everywhere. The deck material on the Blink Lite is Canadian Maple Wood, just like the best standard skateboards. They look exactly the same other than an electric motor on the board. There isn’t much difference between an electric skateboard and a regular skateboard when it comes to the workings. And there’s a good chance you will have seen an Acton Blink Lite while on your travels, too – they are proving popular, and Acton’s promise of being the world’s lightest electric board appears to be paying off. On a typical day in a modern city you will see electric skateboards in parks, on your commute to work, and almost every other environment you can possibly think of. The car vent mount, as the name suggests, fits into a car vent for mounting the iPhone X in the car for use with Maps and other apps while driving. Both are easy to grip because of the rubber edges.Īll of the Rokform cases have magnets built in and ship with an included car vent mount. The Crystal Case is fairly slim, while the Rugged case is thicker and bulkier as it’s made from a thicker material. The volume and power buttons are protected, but there are cutouts for the camera, mute switch, Lightning port, and speakers. Rokform’s cases are made from a hard plastic with rubber edges that wrap around the sides of the iPhone X and come up to protect the display. Rokform makes two cases for the iPhone X, the Crystal Case and the Rugged Case, both of which are priced at $50. The Access case does support wireless charging functionality. It’s awkward when using gestures that require both buttons at the same time (like a screenshot or powering down). With folio cases, I find the volume buttons of the iPhone a little hard to access, and that’s no exception with the Access. Those of you who don’t like the lip at the bottom of the display that some cases have will like the Nodus. At the back, there’s a cutout for the camera. Inside, there’s a soft microfiber and a little flap that can hold cash, credit cards, or whatever else you’d like. I like the folio design because it keeps the iPhone X’s display safe in a pocket, but there’s no protection for the sides of the phone and I wouldn’t want to drop it in this case because it could fall with the flap open. Since there’s no inner case holding the iPhone X in place, this is the thinnest folio case I’ve seen for the iPhone X. (Also, for the record, I didn’t notice any issues with the magnet affecting signal strength. It takes a good amount of pull to get the iPhone X out of the Access, but the adhesive can be used again and again so you can take it out whenever you want. This does work, and it’s convenient, but you’ll still need to avoid tossing it on there haphazardly. Inside the Shell Case is a tiny, hardly recognizable (from the outside) magnet, which can paired with other small, external magnets Nodus calls “Micro Docks.” The idea is to mount a Nodus-clad iPhone wherever you need it - pop the included dock on your car dashboard, for instance, and you’ll have a spot for your GPS. There’s some bonus functionality here, too. The microfiber material on its interior keeps the iPhone’s back from scuffing up while it’s in there. It puts a slight lip over the front, and it fully covers up the power and volume buttons. While a case like this is more luxurious than practical, the Shell Case does provide a little more protection than the Woodline. You’ll see the light marks left by past scratches. It’s still leather, though, so know that it’ll develop character over time. I’m not a fan of the semi-prominent octopus logo plastered on its back, but in general it comes off as refined and professional. It’s another snap-on cover, only it’s composed of a soft, relatively compact cut of leather. It’s a similar story for the Nodus Shell Case, another higher-end iPhone case I’ve been using in recent weeks. Like most cases aimed at being aesthetically pleasing, it isn’t particularly protective, but it does the basics, and it feels fantastic in the hand. Last week I highlighted the Pad & Quill Woodline, a fancy iPhone 6s case made from a thin slice of wood. While the graphics are not the determining factor in my recommendation on which simulator to buy, I prefer the X-Plane 10 presentation over FSX as long as you don’t mind the missing landmarks and less appealing G1000 look. I’ll get more into the functionality below, but the G1000 in FSX looks more like what you see when sitting in the aircraft. Maybe it’s just me, but I like XP 10 when it comes to the standard six-pack.įor the out-of-the-flight-simulator-box G1000, FSX is the winner. While the steam gauges in FSX are just fine for shooting an approach, the steam gauges in XP 10 look more polished and the pointers move more smoothly around the gauges. I am more concerned with what I can see during the approach – the instrument panel and cockpit.Īs far as steam gauges go, I think XP 10 is the better of the two. My primary purpose for using a simulator is to shoot approaches with the G1000 and autopilot, so scenery doesn’t really matter that much since I’ll be putting the cloud layer from 200’ AGL to 10,000’ AGL. The landmarks in FSX look a little cartoony, but at least they are there. FSX on the other hand had all of the landmarks I expected to see, the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bridge to name a few. To sum it up quickly, I like the scenery of XP 10 better, but there were no well-known landmarks to be seen. I flew around New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco and the Grand Canyon on both sims to see how they compare in the scenery detail. Looking outside the cockpit, the scenery of both simulators is fairly decent. Let’s start with how each simulator looks while flying. There are a few modifications in the area of aircraft and avionics that might influence your final decision on which sim best suits your needs. I will also review some modifications that can be installed to enhance the simulator. While the main focus will be G1000 functionality and ForeFlight use, the other areas may be of interest if you are still on the fence. This comparison will consider the following aspects: If you just want to shoot approaches, run through the menus of the G1000, utilize ForeFlight, and practice operating the aircraft systems, this article will illustrate what you will get without having to install several mods. There are a vast number of modifications that you can add to each and while these might give one of the simulators an edge over the other, I want to begin with an out-of-the-box comparison. I will begin by comparing the base simulators. Just know that it is not a super computer, but it is adequate to run both sims smoothly. XP 10 comparison is tailored for you.īefore we jump in, let’s discuss how FSX and XP 10 will be compared. If you’re a pilot of a technically advanced aircraft (TAA), a pilot who uses ForeFlight, or if you want to see what flying is like with today’s tech, this FSX vs. In this article, I will compare two popular flight simulators, Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) and X-Plane 10 (XP 10), focusing on how each simulator handles recent advancements in aviation. With all of the technological advancement in aviation, it is interesting to see how well flight simulators have kept up with the times. Know that you will only need to refer to the step-by-step instructions starting on on, beginning with Step 8, as X-Plane does not require the FSXFlight Plugin. The iFlightPlanner Installation & Setup Guide available in that post was a little soft on the details on how to connect with X-Plane so we're here to offer some clarification for our iFlightPlanner Premium members who are taking advantage of this functionality that's included in their memberships. Revised for X-Plane 11 on December 6, 2017.Īs described in an earlier iFlightPlanner Blog post, you have the ability to connect connect your iPad to your favorite flight simulator and make iFlightPlanner for iPad behave as if it were flying in the virtual skies with you! Sensor noise and noise patterns exist in all sensors, but they will generally be visible only at the highest ISO settings. Even new sensors sometimes have dead or stuck pixels, but they don't generally cause problems unless there are a ton of them. Stuck pixels will register as a wrong-colour dot. Dead pixels are pixels that don't respond to light they show up as black dots. A camera's sensor must be in good condition, free of electronic issues like stuck pixels and unusual noise patterns. Unlike a film camera, a digital camera's image capture device is an integral part of the camera body. This is not necessarily fatal- we can replace light seals- but material and labour costs for this work will affect our offer. In many older cameras, the foam material has broken down into a sticky goo or a crumbly mess. In film cameras, there are usually strips of foam or other material laid into the gaps where the film door meets the body: these help to ensure that the gap is sealed against light and dust. Others respond correctly at some light levels but not at others- like the jumpy shutter speed scenario, these are the most troublesome.Īnd like shutter speed, metering can easily be off by a stop before it realistically starts to affect imaging- but we try to keep error to within a half stop, for the very same reasons as the shutter speed scenario. Some light meters do not respond at all some are offset by a fixed amount. Light meters should respond correctly at all three intensities. We check film camera light meter function with a calibrated light source at three intensities. That's why we don't generally make offers on cameras where the shutter speeds are outside of that +/-0.5 stop tolerance. We can't do anything about the human error, but we can try to minimize the machine error. Realistically, shutter speeds can be off by a stop or more without a great deal of effect on day to day shooting: most modern film has excellent latitude, and human error in metering is more likely to cause a noticeably bad exposure than a slightly-off shutter.īut inaccuracies in shutter speeds can compound with inaccuracies in metering and human error to produce exposures that are not ideal. Not only are the exposures less predictable with a jumpy shutter, but it's also a sign that the shutter may be on its way out. For example, a shutter that is consistently a half stop slow is better than a shutter that's perfect 90% of the time but occasionally jumps out of spec. Shutter speeds should be within a half stop of nominal speed, and they should be consistent. We check film camera shutter speeds by machine. The information below should give you some insight into how we try to live up to that promise. We do our best to ensure that we buy and sell only the kind of equipment that we believe can provide that kind of experience.
